Glycerin

Glycerin is one of the most well-studied humectants in cosmetic science, a small, water-loving molecule that draws moisture from the air and from deeper skin layers to the surface. It is used in nearly every category of skincare product because it supports hydration without altering how other ingredients in a formula perform.

On its own, Glycerin can feel slightly tacky at high concentrations, which is why formulators balance it with emollients and other texture agents. In a well-built formula, it works quietly alongside those ingredients to keep skin feeling soft and hydrated over time.
